2009 Malibu Safety Features

FIVE-STAR SAFETY RATINGS

The 2009 Chevy Malibu earned the highest possible rating in recent government frontal and side-impact crash tests — five stars.(1)

SIX AIR BAGS

Every Malibu comes with six standard air bags:(2)

  • Dual-stage frontal air bags (with right-front Passenger Sensing System) sense the severity of a crash, then determine if the air bags should be deployed and whether a full or less-than-full amount of inflation is to be used. The GM Passenger Sensing System is designed to help reduce the potential for inflation-induced injuries or fatalities to smaller occupants, including children, who may be not be seated properly in front of an active air bag. The system automatically switches the right-front passenger air bag on or off based on the passenger's weight and the type of pressure on the seat.
  • Head-curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear outboard seating positions are mounted to the roof rails. They're designed to reduce the risk of head injuries to front-seat and rear-outboard occupants in certain side-impact collisions.
  • Front-seat-mounted, side-impact thorax air bags for driver and front passenger are designed to help protect an adult's chest in a serious side-impact crash.

OnStar

Every Malibu provides peace of mind with OnStar(3) (standard for one year) to help protect you and your family on the road with nine safety and security features.

Standard OnStar coverage includes a one-year Directions & Connections Plan with Turn-by-Turn Navigation.(4)

If you're in a crash, built−in vehicle sensors can automatically alert an OnStar Advisor who is immediately connected into your vehicle and can request emergency help to be sent to your exact location.

STABILITRAK

The StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control System − which includes Traction Control and panic brake assist − improves vehicle stability, particularly on slick surfaces or during emergency maneuvers. The system is designed to adjust engine torque and/or brake pressure at individual wheels to help you get the vehicle back on track. It's standard on all Malibu models.

FOUR-WHEEL ANTILOCK DISC BRAKES

The brakes are designed to help reduce wheel lockup and help maintain steering control during hard braking on most slippery surfaces. They're standard on every Malibu.

FUEL ECONOMY

Better highway gas engine fuel economy than any other midsize sedan:(5) an EPA estimated MPG 33. Standard on 2LT and LTZ and available on 1LT.

And LS and 1LT with a four-speed transmission have an EPA estimated MPG 22 city and 30 highway.

The ECOTEC 2.4L DOHC four-cylinder Hybrid engine with Variable Valve Timing (VVT) and a four-speed automatic transmission has an EPA estimated MPG 26 city and 34 highway.

The 3.6L V6 DOHC engine with Variable Valve Timing (VVT) available on 2LT and LTZ (requires Engine Package) mated to a six-speed automatic transmission has an EPA estimated MPG 17 city and 26 highway.
