The Most Technologically Advanced Camaro Ever

Welcome to the 2013 Camaro ZL1 — the highest-performing production Camaro of all time. It is literally like nothing you've ever driven before.

Tested on some of the most rigorous tracks around the world, including the Nürburgring, where it clocked in at 7:41.27, the ZL1 was built to be track capable right from the showroom. You’ll know what to expect when you hit the gas. And you won’t be disappointed.

But once you get over the rush of the all-aluminum 6.2L supercharged engine and its 580 horsepower and 556 lb.-ft. of torque, you’ll realize that this Camaro is about much more than raw power. The performance and precision continues with Magnetic Ride Control™, world-class braking and 4-wheel independent suspension you can’t get on a Mustang. This is the kind of vehicle that engineers dream about designing and car nuts dream about driving.

The 2013 Camaro has been recognized by J.D. Power as the “Highest Ranked Midsize Sporty Car in Initial Quality in a Tie.”

Experience the Perfection of the ZL1

See Camaro in Action

Every part. Every function. Every feature. Every piece of the ZL1 has been rigorously put to the test. From the GM Proving Ground to the drag strip to the Nürburgring to the Virginia International Raceway, this car has been wired up, pounded on, checked and rechecked — the 2013 ZL1 has already paid its dues.

The ZL1 video series takes you through the process, including testing the Magnetic Ride Control™, the 24-hour track test and the 7:41.27 lap at the ‘Ring.

The Intersection of Precision and Power

  • 2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in Victory Red
2013 Camaro ZL1, shown in Victory Red, features a carbon-fiber functional air extractor.

Under the Hood Is Just the Start

Camaro ZL1 has a history to respect and build upon. That’s why the 2013 namesake is built so everything works together, to give you not just power, but precision and control.

ZL1 is designed to be driven exactly like it should be — hard. The fuel system has added fuel pickups to maximize the amount of fuel available even under high g-force cornering. The standard TREMEC 6-speed manual transmission comes with a short-throw shifter for increased precision.

The dual-mode exhaust enables peak performance at high engine speeds, and has been engineered to create an aggressive sound at idle without overwhelming when cruising at a steady speed — the drawback of some aftermarket performance exhausts.

This is the kind of fine-tuned engineering that’s been proven not just on famous tracks around the world but on the highways, streets and back roads that you drive every day.

2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 580-horsepower 6.2L SC V8 Engine
6.2L Supercharged V8: 0-60 in 4.1 Seconds

This V8 Packs Heat

You don’t have to be a gear head to feel the rush of an engine that goes from 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds with available Hydra-Matic® 6L90 automatic transmission. Or one that can cover a quarter-mile of pavement in a mere 12 seconds and tops out at 184 with the available automatic.

Once you catch your breath, direct that smile plastered on your face to the all-aluminum 6.2L supercharged engine. This 580-horsepower, 556 lb.-ft. of torque, 6.2-liter supercharged V8 can be mated to a TREMEC 6-speed manual (MG9) or Hydra-Matic 6L90 available automatic transmission. This aluminum-block engine is based on the legendary GM small block V8 architecture and features an intercooled supercharger system and premium heat-resistant aluminum alloy cylinder heads.

Camaro ZL1 Coupe Powertrain and Drivetrain

Supercharge Your Ride

What is a supercharger? It’s what slams you to the back of your seat and slaps a grin on your face quicker than you can yell, “blast-off.” Well, there’s a little more to it than that.

Camaro ZL1 boasts a uniquely designed sixth-generation intercooled 1.9-liter Eaton® supercharger. It’s what gives ZL1 additional thrust, more force and is a big component of the driving exhilaration you’ll feel when you put ZL1 through its paces.

The 4-lobed supercharger enables a broad range of power through the rpm band, giving the engine great low-end torque and excellent horsepower at the upper rpm range where a supercharger generally loses its effectiveness. And while we can’t guarantee it will slap a grin on your face the first time you feel it in action, we’d be surprised if it doesn’t.

Stays Cool When Things Get Hot

Unlike many of its competitors, ZL1 comes fully equipped with factory-integrated auxiliary fluid coolers that would otherwise cost thousands of dollars to install, including a liquid-to-liquid engine cooler typically found on high-end sports cars. Both the manual and automatic transmissions are equipped with high-capacity oil coolers, consisting of a liquid-to-liquid and air-to-oil heat exchanger plumbed in series.

The differential cooler is a truly unique design. This innovative system pumps overcooled transmission fluid to a heat exchanger inside the housing, removing excess heat from the differential fluid.

Manual Transmission

A true harmony of smooth and raw feel, ZL1 features the latest TREMEC 6-speed manual transmission with a short-throw shifter. The shifter has a short-throw ratio and incorporates a driver-orientated shift knob, designed to be performance oriented in the driver’s hand. The system provides smooth transfer of the engine’s exceptional power and torque, and the dual mass flywheel design ensures quiet, smooth operation. The small diameter and low inertia of the twin disc clutch ramp up the 0 — 60 performance.

New for 2013 for those who choose manual transmission is Hill Start Assist, which can help keep your Camaro from rolling backwards when you’re taking off from an inclined position.

Automatic Transmission

The optional automatic transmission is no afterthought — it’s a fully integrated powertrain offering that is completely unique to the segment. The Hydra-Matic 6L90 is built to handle the massive torque and power while steering wheel paddle shifting helps make shifts quick and convenient. The upshift algorithm in TAPshift® mode reduces delay time, allowing for aggressive tap downshifts and upshifts. The algorithm has been designed to recognize aggressive throttle movement to hold lower gears for aggressive driving.

Braking and Handling That Keep You in Control

You can have the most powerful, supercharged engine in the world, but if you don’t have the technology to support it, what do you get? A whole lot of power you can’t use.

Every piece of ZL1 is built to support and optimize every single horse in this machine’s command. Brembo® brakes help provide an exceptional stopping distance.

Performance Traction Management influenced by the Corvette ZR1 with five performance settings adjusts for ambient and track conditions, driver experience and vehicle familiarity. The weight distribution is an exceptional 52% to 48% front to back.

2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 suspension system

ZL1-Tuned Performance Suspension System with Gen 3 Magnetic Ride

ZL1 is remarkably comfortable on the street — and capable on the track — thanks to a series of applications and refinements to the chassis system, including the latest generation of Magnetic Ride technology. The bushings, mounts, dampers and tires have all been tuned for this vehicle’s high-performance dynamics. Springs lower the vehicle to reduce its center of gravity for improved braking and handling. Both the front and rear stabilizer bars have been designed for a dramatic decrease in roll and precisely tuned for perfect handling balance.

More Control on More Surfaces

ZL1 is the first car for sale in North America featuring the latest generation of Magnetic Ride Control™, with three distinct damper calibrations just for ZL1: Tour, Sport and Track. These shocks employ magnetorheological fluid for damping levels adjusted up to 1,000 times per second, making the system exceptionally responsive and providing increased wheel control on even the roughest road or the most challenging track by dramatically reducing heave, pitch and roll. Watch our team test the magnetorheological shocks.

2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 20-inch 10-spoke Black forged aluminum wheels

Ready for Action from the Asphalt Up

ZL1 offers two 20-inch wheel options. Both have 20”x10” front and 20”x11” rear sizes, and are forged aluminum, optimized for high strength and low mass. The standard wheel is a black 10-spoke — or opt for the polished 5-spoke.

The Goodyear® Eagle® F1 SuperCar® Gen 2 summer-only tires have been developed and optimized specifically for ZL1 to yield outstanding handling while maintaining requisite street tire performance for wet handling, tread wear, noise, mass and rolling resistance. These tires are also 11 lbs. lighter per car than the tires on a Camaro SS.

The Evolution of Active Handling

For ZL1, the goal was to create handling and control not just for street use, but to enhance acceleration performance under all racetrack conditions. The resulting Performance Traction Management is an advanced system that integrates the Magnetic Ride, Launch Control, Traction Control and Active Handling systems. The electromechanically powered steering system in ZL1 is specifically engineered for lower inertia and friction, resulting in a direct steering feel and response.

Watch our team test the Launch Control system.

World-Class Braking

ZL1 is equipped with a Brembo brake system with massive 14.6" front rotors. It is considered world class in the high-performance, luxury vehicle niche. The unique two-piece design provides excellent fade resistance and is engineered to stand up to repeated high-speed stops. Huge 6-piston monobloc calipers are asymmetrically laid out in the front, with four pistons in the rear. Brake cooling ducts route air from the fascia to the rotor and caliper.

There’s No Mistaking It. It’s a Camaro.

All That ZL1 History. In One High-Tech Package.

Looking to blend into the crowd? Want to just get by? You might want to keep walking. The exterior of Camaro ZL1 is as aggressive looking as anything on the street. But it’s more than just a mean-looking face: the exterior was designed to function as a package to enhance the overall dynamics of the car, from maximizing downforce and harnessing air pressure to pressing the tires against the track for optimal grip and control. The hood air extractor, large lower grille openings and lower splitter combine for improved cooling and aerodynamic efficiency. Unique ZL1 badging is located on the front grille, the rear, sill plates and under the hood.

Make a distinct statement at night with the standard full lighting package, combining foglamps, separate daytime running lamps and high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps with halo rings.

You’ll Get Noticed. Even Standing Still.

The unmistakable air extractor is engineered from carbon-fiber composites to achieve the highest stiffness and strength achievable with lowest mass. The air extractor pulls air through the lower grille and out through the hood, cooling the engine, increasing efficiency and reducing lift in the process.

The significant feature of the front fascia is the large lower splitter, which reduces front lift significantly and forces air through the lower grille, which is larger than the opening on the SS model. Single-piece rockers with extensions are aero-designed and help keep the vehicle down to balance power. The rear diffuser extends to the rear wheel openings and incorporates metal heat shields to insulate the fascia from the hot exhaust tips.

How Sustainable is the Camaro?

Check out its “Ecologic” Features. Here at Chevrolet, we believe in being a responsible steward of our environment. Recently, we’ve developed a new way to communicate some of the environmentally significant features of each vehicle we make. We call it “Ecologic.”

Every aspect of Ecologic is audited by Two Tomorrows, an independent third party sustainability auditor. To learn more about Ecologic and the Two Tomorrows’ process, click here.

Fuel-Saving Technologies

On models with the 3.6L V6 engine, Continuously Variable Valve Timing (VVT) adjusts airflow in and out of the combustion chamber under all engine speeds, which makes for better fuel economy and lower emissions. With Direct Injection, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber in one of two ways; either before air flows into the cylinder or at the same time, resulting in efficient power generation and fuel consumption.

On models with the 6.2L V8 engine, electric power steering uses an electric motor instead of an engine-driven belt, which results in a lighter overall workload and increased efficiency. Active Fuel Management™ deactivates fuel delivery to 4 cylinders in lighter-load conditions, such as highway cruising, which improves fuel economy (V8 SS, automatic transmission only).

Responsible Manufacturing

The engine facilities are landfill-free. These facilities use a process to reuse, recycle or convert to energy all waste created in their daily operations, which conserves resources. Some water and engine-air deflectors are manufactured with more than 99% recycled content, which includes used tires. Recycled material conserves resources and reduces landfill deposits.

Landfill gas supplies 16% of the energy to heat and cool the Toledo, OH, transmission facility (automatic transmission only), which makes the facility less reliant on fossil fuels. The facility also features a designated habitat area certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council, which provides ecological benefits.

End-of-Life Recyclability

After the vehicle’s useful life, 85% of it is recyclable. The majority of its components can be broken down and recycled, which conserves resources and reduces landfill deposits.
