Voltec electric drive unit

The cutting-edge Volt™ is propelled by a Voltec™ electric drive unit. This electric unit produces up to 149 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The unit runs on electricity provided by either the high-voltage lithium-ion battery or the on-board gasoline-powered generator.

Electric motors have the mechanical advantage of a linear hp and constant torque output, resulting in instant torque at all speeds with smooth acceleration without the shifting of gears.
