The 2013 Malibu Eco Becomes a IIHS 2012 Top Safety Pick And Receives a NHTSA 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score for Safety

Aside from offering fantastic fuel efficiency along with sleek styling, Malibu Eco is now one of several Chevy vehicles to be selected as a IIHS 2012 Top Safety Pick. The sedan also received a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“We are now seeing the results from our commitment to design the highest-rated vehicles in the world in safety performance,” said Gay Kent, GM executive director of Vehicle Safety. “Earning these top safety ratings demonstrates the strength of the Malibu’s advanced structure, overall crashworthiness and effectiveness of the vehicle’s state-of-the-art safety technologies.”

The IIHS tests vehicles to determine how well they protect occupants in front and side crash tests, in rollovers via a roof strength test, and simulated rear impacts to evaluate seat/head restraints for protection against neck injuries. Malibu Eco was able to emerge from these four tests with a good score across the board and demonstrated standard electronic stability control, which is a requirement for the Top Safety Pick designation.

To receive a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score for safety, Malibu Eco completed tests under the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s revised New Car Assessment Program. The overall score is based on frontal and side crash tests in addition to rollover resistance testing. Under this new assessment, the three test conditions are combined mathematically to determine an “Overall Vehicle Score.”

Malibu Eco offers a number of top-notch safety features, including:

  • Driver and front passenger dual-stage frontal air bags, front seat-mounted side impact air bags and knee air bags, and head-curtain side air bags with rollover protection that covers front and outboard rear seats.
  • Rollover sensors that can activate the head curtain side air bags if sensors determine an imminent rollover. If a rollover occurs, the air bags stay inflated longer to provide increased occupant protection.
  • OnStar® with Automatic Crash Response standard for six months. In the event of a collision built-in sensors can automatically alert an OnStar® Advisor, who is immediately connected into your vehicle to see if you need help sent to your exact location—even if you can't respond.

All of this recognition for the impressive safety of Malibu Eco makes the car the 15th GM vehicle to be named as a IIHS 2012 Top Safety Pick and the sixth Chevy within the 2012 model year to achieve a NHTSA 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score. These accomplishments are just another reminder of how Chevy is committed to delivering the kind of safety that matters before, during and after a collision or a crash.
