Power
Chassis / Frame / Trailer Hitch
The design of every part of the completely reengineered chassis and frame was dictated by the function it will perform. The chassis helps provide 2,039 pounds of maximum payload capacity, more than any other half-ton crew cab.(1) For Extended Cab, the maximum payload capacity is 2,160 pounds.
The reengineered frame is 230 percent torsionally stiffer and the front frame is fully boxed and hydroformed. Hydroforming means fewer welds, providing clean attachment points with a better fit to the frame. The results: immense overall frame strength and durability, as well as improved isolation from road noise and better ride performance.
The rear frame is fully boxed back to the spare tire cross member. This ingenious design boosts payload capacity without adding unnecessary mass and results in a stronger, more efficient frame.
- Based on 2006 GM Large Pickup segment and latest available competitive information. Excludes other GM vehicles. Maximum payload capacity includes weight of driver, passengers, optional equipment necessary to achieve the rating and cargo. Cargo and load capacity limited by weight and distribution.
Engines
With its legendary lineup of Vortec engines, Silverado offers the widest selection of engines of any half-ton pickup in its class.
Leading the charge: the available, muscular 367-horsepower Vortec MAX 6.0L V8 that delivers impressive fuel efficiency(1) and more maximum half-ton horsepower and towing capacity — 10,500 pounds' worth — than any other half-ton pickup on the market.(2)
- 15 MPG city/19 MPG highway. Based on GM testing. EPA estimates not yet available.
- Based on 2006 GM Large Pickup segment and latest available competitive information. Requires MAX Trailering Package. Maximum trailer weight ratings are calculated assuming a base vehicle, except for any option(s) necessary to achieve the rating, plus driver. The weight of other optional equipment, passengers and cargo will reduce the maximum trailer weight your vehicle can tow. See your Chevy dealer for more details.
Cargo Management System
The all new, available Cargo Management System(1) provides practically everything you need for the long haul. This configurable system utilizes sliding hooks embedded in C-channel tracks that run along both sides and the front of the pickup box. Each anchor in this integrated system is rated up to 500 lbs. Plus, there are numerous Chevy Accessories — such as side storage boxes and a ladder rack — designed specifically to work with this system. And even with the boxes in place, there’s still room for additional storage. The pickup box is available in three lengths: short, standard and long.
- Cargo and load capacity limited by weight and distribution.
Cavernous Storage
Silverado WT and LT models feature two glove boxes. 1LT models go a step further, offering 15.2 liters of combined center armrest and lockable underseat storage space. The center armrest boasts 6.1 liters of storage, complementing the 9.1 liters of space in the underseat storage compartment. Located beneath the cushion, the underseat compartment is lockable and provides enough space to store a laptop, which can maintain its power via an integrated 12-volt outlet. And, if all this space isn't enough, models equipped with available front bucket seats have 20 liters of front console storage.
Locking Rear Differential
When rear-wheel slippage is detected at lower speeds, the enhanced, available GM segment-exclusive(1) automatic locking rear differential allows additional traction on snow, mud, wet boat ramps and ice. If one of the rear wheels has traction while the other does not, the locking rear axle automatically sends power to the wheel with grip to move the vehicle. Locking rear differential benefits include:
- Enhanced performance for on- and off-road driving and towing
- Full lockup for maximum drive power to both rear wheels
- Fully automatic engagement
- Speed-sensitive actuation, which provides axle lockup when one wheel spins faster than the other.
- Based on 2006 GM Large Pickup segment.
Technology
Active Fuel Management™
With Active Fuel Management(TM) technology from GM, Silverado's Vortec 5.3L and Vortec Max 6.0L V8 engines deliver power when you need it ... and when you don't. In situations where extra power is not needed, such as when you're cruising down the highway on level roads, Active Fuel Management(TM) deactivates four of the eight cylinders with seamless precision. When load demands increase, such as when the truck accelerates or travels uphill, the powerful 32-bit engine control computer triggers cylinder deactivation based on inputs from the vehicle sensors — the deactivation and reactivation events are seamless.
The bottom line: The next-generation Vortec 5.3L and Max 6.0L V8 engines are more efficient in providing the energy to move the vehicle when only four of the eight cylinders are operating.
FlexFuel E85 Ethanol Engine
GM is a leader in producing E85 vehicles. And this year, Chevrolet will offer more cars and trucks with E85 ethanol capability than any other brand.
The available FlexFuel Vortec 5.3L V8 engine can run on either gasoline or E85 — a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline — or a combination of both. E85 ethanol fuel is a cleaner-burning, renewable fuel source made primarily from U.S.-grown biomaterial, such as corn or other grain products.
In addition to helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions, E85 fuel generally has a higher octane rating than regular unleaded gasoline, which can result in slightly higher horsepower and torque levels.
E85 fuel availability varies by state. Go to livegreengoyellow.com to see if there is an E85 fuel station near you.
Widest-Opening Rear Side Doors(1)
Silverado Extended Cab models are designed from the outside in. That's why the GM-exclusive rear side doors offer easy access to the rear cabin, opening up to a whopping 170 degrees. That's more than any other full-size pickup.(1) The doors completely fold back in three detents — 60 degrees to 90 degrees to 170 degrees — giving you unobstructed access to the interior. They also have a solid and stable feel with hinges that are bolted on (versus welded) for a better fit and finish. Plus, these doors can be equipped with full-drop power windows.
- Based on 2006 GM Large Pickup segment. Excludes other GM vehicles.
Folding Rear Seats and Power Windows
Crew Cab and Extended Cab models offer room and convenience to spare, including a 60/40 split-bench rear stadium seat that easily flips up to provide an unobstructed load floor. This means that the interior configuration can quickly be converted from hauling passengers comfortably — thanks to unequalled Extended Cab rear legroom — to hauling cargo. Added convenience features: power rear side windows and a power side-sliding rear window. Cargo and load capacity are limited by weight and distribution.
EZ Lift Tailgate
Silverado offers a choice of two tailgates. In addition to the standard tailgate, there's the available new EZ Lift, lockable tailgate that requires only about 16 lbs. of effort to operate. This makes for quick and easy access to tools and cargo in the pickup bed. And, like all Silverados, the tailgate can be easily removed. Included and available only in the EZ Lift Tailgate Package.
NEW Instrument Panel Designs
GM engineers designed not one, but two new instrument panels that are functional and intuitive — each tailored to the function it will perform. In Silverado Work Truck (WT) and LT models, the instrument panel — surrounded by two-tone interior accents — has been moved 3.5 inches down and forward. This design places the large controls within easy reach, and you can easily operate them even while wearing work gloves. The panel houses highly visible instrumentation that includes the Driver Information Center (DIC), a speedometer and a tachometer, plus gauges for fuel level and engine temperature. The LTZ instrument panel — surrounded by rich woodgrain accents — has been moved five inches down and forward for even more added room and comfort. This design creates an environment of spacious luxury appropriate for the most premium trim level in the Silverado lineup. Visually refined instrumentation is naturally integrated into the panel and consists of the DIC, a speedometer, a tachometer and a voltmeter, plus gauges for fuel level, engine temperature and oil pressure.
360° of Safety
NEW StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control System
StabiliTrak helps improve vehicle stability, particularly during emergency maneuvers. The system, standard on Crew Cab models — a GM exclusive(1) — and available on Extended Cab LT models, also includes Proactive Roll Avoidance, which reduces the vehicle's tendency to roll over in an emergency situation.
Here’s how StabiliTrak works:
- The StabiliTrak control module compares your steering input with the truck's actual response and then, if necessary, makes small, individual brake applications to enhance control and keep you on track.
- StabiliTrak automatically intervenes if the system senses loss of lateral traction (sideslip), understeer (plowing) or oversteer (fishtailing). In these situations, the system applies brake pressure and, if necessary, adjusts engine torque to help you get the vehicle back on track.
- Based on 2006 GM Large Pickup segment and latest available competitive information.
NEW OnStar
OnStar(1) with a one-year Safe & Sound Plan provides you with 24-hour access to trained OnStar Advisors who can help in a variety of situations, from contacting emergency personnel to the scene of an accident to helping unlock your doors when you're locked out.(2) Each month, OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics(3) can automatically email you with the results of hundreds of key operating system checks, including engine, transmission, antilock brakes and more, as well as send reminders of scheduled maintenance. It's just one more way OnStar helps give you peace of mind when you're on the road.
And new Turn-by-Turn Navigation(4) — included with the available Directions & Connections Plan — gives you simple, step-by-step voice-guided instructions on how to get to your next destination. Push the OnStar button and you'll never have to stop and ask for directions.
And there's more: A new Advanced Automatic Crash Notification feature notifies OnStar in the event of a front, rear or side impact even without air bag deployment. And OnStar can gather critical collision data from the vehicle to describe the severity and type of collision that occurred. This data — as well as the vehicle's location — can then be provided to emergency service agencies which can help decrease response times and deliver the most appropriate emergency response personnel and equipment.
- OnStar acts as a link to emergency services. Call 1-888-4ONSTAR (1-888-466-7827) or visit onstar.com for system limitations and details.
- Success varies with conditions.
- Diagnostic services vary on Silverado Diesel models.
- Turn-by-Turn Navigation requires antilock brakes and is not available in certain areas. See dealer for details.
Head-Curtain Side-Impact Air Bags
Silverado's dedication to 360 degrees of safety continues with dual-stage frontal air bags and a Passenger Sensing System and new available head-curtain side air bags.(1) These new air bags help reduce the risk of injury to all outboard occupants in certain side impacts. They're designed to automatically deploy upon sensing certain side-impact or rollover collisions and cover the first and second rows of Crew Cab and Extended Cab models. In the event of a rollover, the air bags stay inflated for up to six seconds to help reduce the risk of ejection.
- Always use safety belts and the correct child restraint for your child's age and size. Even in vehicles equipped with the Passenger Sensing System, children are safer when properly secured in a rear seat in the appropriate infant, child or booster seat. Never place a rear-facing infant restraint in the front seat of any vehicle equipped with an active frontal air bag. Air bag inflation can cause severe injury or death to anyone too close to the bag when it deploys. Be sure every occupant is properly restrained. See the vehicle Owner's Manual and child safety seat instructions for more information.
Frame-Compatibility Bracket
Yet another new safety feature is a frame-compatibility bracket. Shaped like a horseshoe and attached to the bottom of the front frame rail. In head-on, truck-car collisions, the bracket is designed to contact the car's bumper to absorb impact energy and help prevent the truck from riding up and onto the car's energy-absorbing structure.
And there's more: A new Advanced Automatic Crash Notification feature alerts OnStar(1) in the event of a front, rear or side impact even without air bag deployment. And OnStar can gather critical collision data from the vehicle to describe the severity and type of collision that occurred. This data — as well as the vehicle's location — can then be provided to emergency service agencies which can help decrease response times and deliver the most appropriate emergency response personnel and equipment.
