2008 HHR

2008 HHR Safety Features

Five-Star Safety Rating

The 2008 HHR scored the highest possible rating for all four crash seating positions. That means the driver and right-front passenger seating positions for the frontal crash test plus the front and rear seating positions for the side-impact crash test each received five stars.(1)

Four-Star Rollover Rating

The 2008 HHR scored four stars on the rollover resistance rating. That means its risk for rollover is only 10%–20% in a single–vehicle crash. Be sure to maintain your tires, load your vehicle properly and avoid overcorrecting your steering to help minimize your risk of rollover.(2)

Antilock Brake System (ABS)

The antilock brake system (ABS) is a crash avoidance feature that helps prevent wheel lockup during braking on most slippery road conditions. ABS is standard on SS Turbocharged and all 2LT models and included and only available with the Enhanced Safety Package on all LS and 1LT models.

StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control System

StabiliTrak — a new standard feature on SS Turbocharged and all 2LT models — helps improve vehicle stability, particularly during emergency maneuvers. Here's how StabiliTrak works:

  • The StabiliTrak control module compares your steering input with the vehicle's actual response and then, if necessary, makes small, individual brake applications to enhance control and keep you on track.
  • StabiliTrak automatically intervenes when it senses loss of lateral traction (sideslip), understeer (plowing) or oversteer (fishtailing).
  • In these situations, the system applies brake pressure and, if necessary, adjusts engine torque to help the driver get the vehicle back on track.
  • SS Turbocharged models feature a driver-selectable Competitive mode.

Head-Curtain Side-Impact Air Bags

Head-curtain side-impact air bags, mounted to the roof rail, are designed to reduce the risk of head injuries to front- and rear–seat outboard occupants (HHR models only) on the near side of certain side-impact collisions. They're available on every HHR and HHR Panel, but are included and only available in the Enhanced Safety Package on all LS and 1LT models.(3)

Driver Information Center (DIC)

This standard feature helps keep you up to date on various functions of your HHR. Located inside the speedometer, it includes an Oil Life Monitor and conveys trip information and calculations. You'll also get personalized settings such as door-lock functionality, Remote Keyless Entry preferences and remote start disablement (when equipped). Readouts are available in three languages — English, Spanish and French.

OnStar

OnStar(4) with a one-year Safe & Sound Plan is standard on HHR and HHR Panel. An OnStar Advisor is always ready to help in a variety of situations, whether you've locked your keys in your car,(5) have a flat tire or have your air bags deployed.(3)

Traction Control

To enhance traction and help keep you going, this feature uses the ABS sensors to automatically detect and act to reduce wheel slip. It's standard on SS Turbocharged and all 2LT models, but is included and only available with ABS and the automatic transmission on all LS and 1LT models.

1 Five-star rating is for the driver and front passenger seating positions in the frontal crash test and for the front and rear seating positions in the side-impact crash test. Side-impact crash test rating is for a model tested without optional head-curtain side-impact air bags (SABs). Government star ratings are part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA's) New Car Assessment Program (www.safercar.gov).

3 A NOTE ABOUT CHILD SAFETY: Always use safety belts and the correct child restraint for your child's age and size. Even in vehicles equipped with the Passenger Sensing System, children are safer when properly secured in a rear seat in the appropriate infant, child or booster seat. Never place a rear-facing infant restraint in the front seat of any vehicle equipped with an active air bag. Head-curtain side-impact air bags are designed to help reduce the risk of head and neck injuries to front and rear seat occupants on the near side of certain side-impact collisions. See the Owner's Manual and child safety seat instructions for more safety information.
