Regenerative Braking

There’s no need to ever think about charging the lithium-ion battery. eAssist features regenerative braking that captures power normally lost during coasting or braking, converts it to electricity and stores it for when it’s needed, helping keep the lithium-ion battery charged and off your to-do list.

How do you power a battery without charging it? It’s simple: Just drive and in certain scenarios the lithium-ion battery stores energy to keep charged. That energy is later used to deliver an electric boost to the engine during heavy acceleration or climbing a grade. And while the vehicle is at a stop, the engine shuts off and the battery-powered motor-generator unit powers accessories, preserving fuel so it can be used later†.

15 kW Motor-Generator Unit

Owning the 2013 Malibu Eco means you get a smarter drive. When the car is stopped, it automatically switches from using gas to energy from the lithium-ion battery. The motor-generator unit brings the engine to a smooth stop and prepares it for a seamless start when the brake pedal is released. Drivers wouldn’t notice the transition if it weren’t for the integrated high-resolution full-color Driver Information Center and 7-inch diagonal touch-screen that display when the battery is supporting the powertrain.

    Protection is great, but prevention is better. The 2013 Malibu was designed with that in mind, offering technologies that can help avoid collisions altogether including 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, traction control and the StabiliTrak® Electronic Stability Control System.

    There's also the available Lane Departure Warning that lets you know when you're wandering from your lane without using your turn signal (above 25 mph), and available advanced Forward Collision Alert that signals, when you're rapidly approaching a vehicle, that a collision may become imminent.

    During

    In the event of a collision, Malibu is equipped to help protect you and your passengers. For the first time, Malibu now includes 10 airbags† including knee air bags for the driver and front passenger†. Structural integrity of the vehicle is important during a collision and Malibu provides an extremely strong, stiff body and an ultra-high-strength steel safety cage, along with rollover protection.

    After

    Every Malibu offers the security of OnStar®†with Automatic Crash Response, standard for the first six months. Built-in sensors can automatically alert an OnStar Advisor who is immediately connected to you through your vehicle to see if you need help sent to your exact location — even if you can’t respond.

    Fuel-Saving Technologies

    An electronically controlled six-speed transmission allows the engine to operate at a lower rate of speed as compared to transmissions with fewer gears, which results in better fuel economy. Low-mass materials, such as an aluminum hood and carbon-reinforced composite intake manifold, reduce engine workload and contribute to better fuel economy.

    The Malibu Eco eAssist uses a 15kW electric-motor generator that takes advantage of the forward motion of the car during slowdown to generate electricity, which is sent to the battery for storage. The stored energy provides the ability to run accessories without burning gasoline when the engine shuts off and when decelerating. It also provides an electric boost of torque when needed for acceleration and passing. This motor generator also boosts the 2.4L engine by 15 horsepower for added fuel efficiency in certain conditions. Malibu Eco achieves an EPA-estimated 37 MPG on the highway.

    Responsible Manufacturing

    The transmission facilities are landfill-free. These facilities use a process to reuse, recycle or convert to energy all waste created in their daily operations, which conserves resources. Landfill gas supplies 16% of the energy to heat and cool the Toledo, OH, transmission facility, which makes the facility less reliant on fossil fuels.

    The Detroit-Hamtramck, MI, assembly facility, Spring Hill, TN, engine facility and Toledo, OH, transmission facility feature designated habitat areas certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council, which provide ecological benefits.

    End-of-Life Recyclability

    After the vehicle’s useful life, 85% of it is recyclable. The majority of its components can be broken down and recycled, which conserves resources and reduces landfill deposits.
