Together, the reliable available Duramax® Diesel and the available, legendary Allison® transmission have been proving themselves in the field and on the job for over a decade.
Heavy-duty Allison® six-speed transmission harnesses the power of the available Duramax. To make sure it can handle the increase in torque, we beefed it up with:
The Regular Cab Silverado 3500HD with a diesel engine can tow up to 23,000 lbs. with a fifth wheel trailer, while the Extended and Crew Cabs with diesel engines can tow up to 18,000 lbs. with a conventional hitch4. Our Regular Cab equipped with a gas engine has a maximum payload capacity of 7,215 lbs5.
Our chassis features a high-strength, fully-boxed steel frame that lets Silverado 3500HD shoulder up to 7,215 lbs. of payload5,8. The suspension has big, strong components to handle large loads and provide the ride quality the driver deserves.
The front suspension offers huge precision-forged upper control arms and torsion bars along with the largest steering gear we've ever used on a heavy-duty truck, which supports up to a 6,000-lb. FGAWR. So every HD 4x4 model can easily accommodate a snow plow with the available Snow Plow Prep Package. And unlike Ford or Ram, Silverado HD incorporates torsion bars that allow an owner to easily adjust the front of the vehicle back to its normal ride height, even with the weight of a plow attached.
Silverado offers Tow/Haul Mode that enhances performance while pulling a trailer or hauling heavy loads. When activated, this feature modifies the automatic transmission shift schedule and helps reduce throttle pedal activity by the driver while traveling over rolling terrain. New for 2012, is Cruise Grade Braking, which uses transmission downshifts to allow engine compression braking to slow the vehicle and its load. It works in and out of Tow/Haul mode on the Vortec® 6.0L engine.

Maximum trailer weight ratings are calculated assuming a base vehicle, except for any option(s) necessary to achieve the rating, plus driver. The weight of other optional equipment, passengers and cargo will reduce the maximum trailer weight your vehicle can tow. See your Chevrolet dealer for additional details.
Off-site doesn't mean out of the loop. With internet access, a number of ways to listen to traffic updates, music, news and sports, plus the assistance and security of OnStar car technology9, standard for 6 months on most models, you're covered from bumper to trailer hitch with the latest in mobile and safety technology.

Silverado 3500HD offers the available, durable heavy-duty Allison® transmission, plus a number of other components that give you confidence when you're towing or hauling a heavy load.
StabiliTrak® Electronic Stability Control System helps you keep on the road and in control. The control module compares your steering input with the vehicle's actual response and then, if necessary, makes small, individual applications to help keep you on track. StabiliTrak® includes Hill Start Assist (SRW models only) which, on uphill inclines greater than 5%, automatically engages to hold the truck stationary for about a second after the brake is released. This gives you time to accelerate before the truck can roll backward. Also included is Trailer Sway Control (SRW models only)—even more assurance—and something Ram doesn't offer. Working in conjunction with StabiliTrak, the Trailer Sway Control feature senses trailer way and automatically applies the truck's brakes to help reduce sway and help maintain control.
Diesel Exhaust Brake System on the available Duramax® Diesel, it uses the technology of a variable vane geometry turbo to create back pressure to slow the vehicle down. That means reduced brake fade, prolonged brake life, and more confidence on steep grades. Auto Grade Braking automatically downshifts the transmission to help show the truck-and give you more control-when you apply the brakes while descending long, steep grades. Big, Strong Brakes: Large rotors and calipers improve brake pedal feel and result in shorter pedal travel. With Intelligent Brake Assist, the calipers are preloaded, so when the system senses a panic-braking situation, the brakes can be fully applied more quickly. Silverado also offers an available integrated trailer brake controller-an extra measure of security when you need it. Click here to read more about vehicle safety.
