A safety philosophy that runs deep

Sonic boasts aggressive styling and impressive power, but make no mistake ­— with Sonic, safety is a priority. Sonic is the first and only car in is class to receive a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score for safety from NHTSA and was also named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Sonic is built around a steel safety cage and offers extensive safety features for prevention, reaction and response technology to optimize safety before, during and after a crash, if needed.  Other advancements you can count on — including daytime running lamps and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System† — are just a few of the ways we help you avoid trouble on the road.

 

Prevent

From the moment you set out on the road, technologies like the StabiliTrak® Electronic Stability Control System with traction control are at the ready. On slippery surfaces, StabiliTrak helps you stay on course by detecting the difference between the path being steered and the direction the vehicle is actually traveling.

It then uses the brakes and, if necessary, adjusts engine torque to help you keep your Sonic on track. What’s more, 4-wheel antilock brakes help maintain control and stability during hard braking by preventing wheel lockup. And Electronic Brake Force Distribution on the front and rear brakes has Panic Brake Assist to help optimize stopping power.

 

Protect

Sometimes, however, trouble finds you. And if a moderate-to-severe collision does occur, Sonic is designed to respond quickly as the first and only car in its class† with 10 standard air bags†.Sensors throughout the vehicle determine how many air bags deploy — including knee air bags for the driver and front passenger. Adding to this protection, the cabin is reinforced with high-strength steel throughout. Meanwhile, front and rear “crush zones” are designed to compress in a controlled manner, helping absorb and channel energy away from the cabin. But our protective measures don’t end there.

Respond

In many crashes, built-in sensors can automatically alert an OnStar®† Advisor, who is immediately connected into the vehicle to see if you need help. Even if you don’t respond, the Advisor can use GPS technology to pinpoint your exact location and request that emergency help be sent right away. Fuel-Saving Technologies

Continuously Variable Valve Timing (VVT) adjusts airflow in and out of the combustion chamber under all engine speeds, which makes for better fuel economy and lower emissions. Electric power steering uses an electric motor instead of an engine-driven belt, which results in a lighter overall workload and better fuel economy.

The engine has been factory-filled with engine oil meeting GM’s new dexosTM specification, which has improved viscosity characteristics as compared to the previous GF-4 oil, contributing to better fuel economy. An available advanced small-displacement 1.4-liter turbocharged Ecotec four-cylinder engine offers 40 MPG highway. With reduced engine displacement and an advanced turbocharger, this vehicle delivers segment-leading fuel economy and torque.

Responsible Manufacturing

Landfill gas supplies more than 20% of the total energy for heating and cooling of the final assembly facility, which makes the facility less reliant on fossil fuels. The 1.4L engine facility and the transmission facilities are landfill-free. These facilities use a process to reuse, recycle or convert to energy all waste created in their daily operations, which conserves resources.

Sonic is the only vehicle in its class assembled in the United States. This reduces energy consumption and emissions related to vehicle transport. The Toledo, OH, transmission facility features designated habitat areas certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council, which provide ecological benefits.

End-of-Life Recyclability

After the vehicle’s useful life, 85% of it is recyclable. The majority of its components can be broken down and recycled, which conserves resources and reduces landfill deposits.
