Cory Larsen’s first car was a 1969 Chevelle, and this resto-mod example, with a Chevrolet Performance ZZ427/480 crate engine under the hood, is his fourth Chevy A-body. The Big Block is backed by a TREMEC five-speed manual transmission, which channels torque to a Strange S60 rear axle, an updated version of the Dana 60 9.75-inch rearend.
Larsen opted for the ZZ427/480 because it matched the max displacement offered in 1969. Chevrolet Performance’s crate engine is inspired by the classic L88 427, with an iron four-bolt block and an all-forged rotating assembly, but with a hydraulic roller camshaft in place of the L88’s original flat-tappet cam. It enhances overall performance, while helping the engine produce 480 horsepower and 490 lb.-ft. of torque.
The car’s cabin is trimmed in black, with red stitching in the upholstery providing a distinctive accent. Additional interior highlights include a Vintage Air climate system with air conditioning, modern front seats and aftermarket steering wheel, a carbon fiber instrument panel insert filled with AutoMeter gauges, and a custom audio system linked to a Kenwood head unit.
When the Chevelle’s body was stripped during the restoration, no rust or signs of previous damage were discovered. It was repainted Crystal Red Metallic, a modern Corvette color, and the car’s chrome was also redone. Second-generation Camaro mirrors were installed, along with a cowl-induction hood. The body was installed on a restored, powder-coated chassis.
Along with the gauges in the replacement instrument cluster, there’s also a trio of auxiliary AutoMeter gauges mounted in a carbon fiber housing on the bottom of the dashboard. Also visible is the shifter from American Powertrain that connects to the TREMEC TKO 600 five-speed gearbox.
Cast aluminum valve covers with raised lettering help distinguish the ZZ427 crate engine. Induction details include a Holley four-barrel carburetor mounted atop an aluminum intake manifold. There are also long-tube headers that flow into a custom dual-exhaust system.
