Jim Miller purchased this 1981 Trans Am in 1994. It was brown, but he repainted it yellow and made additional modifications to the car. Additional upgrades were made over the years, before the plunge was taken to give the car a complete Pro Touring makeover — a build that included a Chevrolet Performance LSX376-B15 crate engine topped with a Magnuson Superchargers TVS2650 blower.
Chevrolet Performance engineers designed the LSX376-B15 crate engine to support the boost pressure of supercharged and turbocharged applications. For this engine, a Magnuson Superchargers TVS2650 blower pumps pressurized air into the combustion chambers. The Roots-type supercharger is topped with the Trans Am’s iconic shakerstyle hood scoop.
Countless custom features and details distinguish this F-Body’s interior, including a racing-style flat-bottom steering wheel that features the original Trans Am spokes and center emblem. There are also New Vintage USA gauges that work with the LSX engine’s electronic controller, as well as Vintage Air® climate system, a custom audio system and a roll cage.
Retaining the Trans Am’s hood scoop and “bird” graphic were priorities for the build but it proved challenging, because of the supercharger’s height. Making it work involved lowering and moving the engine rearward in the chassis, while the hood’s center was raised slightly. Even the graphics had to be tweaked, but the results of all the painstaking detail work are impressive. The hood scoop and bird graphic look stock.
In addition to sourcing the car’s engine from Chevrolet, the Super Magnum sixspeed manual transmission is also from the Chevrolet Performance catalog. A few modifications to the original transmission tunnel were required for installation, but the shifter rises through the console just like one for an original four-speed car.
From the rear, a prominent diffuser and a raised rear spoiler contribute to the car’s Pro Touring theme, while under the skin are features including Ridetech suspension elements and an air ride system. There are also mini-tubs for the huge rear 335-series rear tires, which are mounted on Boze® 20 x 12-inch forged aluminum wheels. Additional features include a custom 9-inch rear axle and high-performance disc brakes.
