As part of GM’s commitment to safety, experts from GM and LG have identified the simultaneous presence of two rare manufacturing defects in the same battery cell as the root cause of battery fires in certain Chevrolet Bolt EVs. As a result, GM will be conducting a recall of Bolt EVs (2017-2022) and Bolt EUVs (2022) to address the risk of battery fires in these vehicles.

What You Should Do

Out of an abundance of caution, GM will replace defective lithium-ion battery modules in Chevrolet Bolt EVs and EUVs with new lithium-ion modules. We will notify customers when replacement parts are ready. When notified, please schedule an appointment with your preferred Chevrolet EV dealership.

As we continue to build battery replacement modules, Chevrolet has informed all Bolt EV and Bolt EUV owners in the recall population (2017-2022MY Chevrolet Bolt EVs and Bolt EUVs) of a software update that will allow owners to remove the parking and overnight charging limitations on their vehicles. To obtain the software update while you wait for your replacement appointment, please schedule an appointment with your preferred Chevrolet dealer to have the software installed.

This software update automatically sets the vehicle’s maximum state of charge to 80%, allowing owners to safely resume:

  • Charging indoors overnight;
  • Operating below 70 miles (113 km) of range, resulting in greater overall vehicle range compared to GM’s prior interim charging guidance; and
  • Parking indoors after charging

Until you have the software updated, we ask that you continue to follow these steps:

  1. Set your vehicle to a 90 percent state of charge limitation using Hilltop Reserve mode (for 2017-2018 model years) or Target Charge Level mode (for 2019-2022 model years). Instructions on how to do this are available in the videos below. If you are unable to successfully make these changes, or do not feel comfortable making these changes, please visit your Chevrolet dealer to have these adjustments completed.
  2. Charge your vehicle more frequently and avoid depleting your vehicle battery to below approximately 70 miles (113 kilometers) of remaining range, where possible.
  3. Park your vehicle outside immediately after charging and do not leave your vehicle charging indoors overnight.

What is the defect in recalled batteries?
The problem consists of two LG manufacturing defects (a torn anode tab and folded separator) that, in rare circumstances, can simultaneously present in a single battery cell in the LG battery module.
When do you expect to have all the recalled vehicles repaired?
We are working aggressively with LG to adjust production to have replacement modules available as soon as possible.
Can GM provide more specifics related to the warranty?
General Motors warrants new or refurbished advanced propulsion batteries installed under this recall against defects in material or workmanship for the warranty coverage period of 8 Years/100,000 Miles (whichever comes first). GM will repair or replace the part, in its sole discretion, at no charge if the part fails due to a defect in material or workmanship during the warranty coverage period (Note: Labor is also covered if installed by a GM EV Dealer). This limited parts warranty begins at the time of installation.
What confidence does GM have that the replacement modules won’t have the same defects?
GM will only begin replacing battery modules in customer vehicles when GM and LG are confident in the safety of LG’s product.
I moved and no longer live near a dealership who can work on EVs. What am I supposed to do?
