Charging your Bolt EV

Charging your Bolt EV is as easy as plugging in your cell phone with the available 240-volt charging unit (professional installation required). This powerful charging unit can charge your Bolt EV up to five times faster than with the 120-volt portable charge cord.

Level 1: Standard 120-volt portable charge cord

BOLT EV

  • Offers about 4 miles per hour of charge.
  • A 12-hour charge give you about 48 miles of range which is roughly equivalent to the average daily commute.
  • Standard with vehicle

VOLT

  • Offers about 4 miles per hour of charge.
  • A 12-hour charge give you about 48 miles of range which is roughly equivalent to the average daily commute.
  • Standard with vehicle

When using the included 120-volt portable charge cord, you can plug in anywhere there’s a 3-prong outlet. Charging this way takes a little more time, so if you decide to use this as your home-base charging method, the key is to plug in every day after work and charge up overnight. That way, your battery never empties and you’re just topping off what you used earlier that day.

Level 2: RECOMMENDED 240-volt/32-amp charging unit

BOLT EV

  • Up to 25 miles per hour of charge
  • The fastest, most convenient way to charge at home.
  • Easily top off your charge.
  • If you drive an average commute of 40 miles, you could fully replenish the battery in less than 2 hours.
  • Charging unit requires professional installation

VOLT

  • Up to 22 miles per hour of charge
  • The fastest, most convenient way to charge at home.
  • Easily top off your charge.
  • If you drive an average commute of 40 miles, you could fully replenish the battery in less than 2 hours.
  • Charging unit requires professional installation

Bolt EV and Volt come with standard 240-volt charging capabilities. The available 240-volt charging unit is the fastest, most convenient way to charge at home. It requires professional installation, so talk to a certified electrician about installation costs and incentives in your area.

Just as a heads-up, you may want to delay charging until utility rates are at their lowest off-peak prices, which is usually at night while you sleep.

DC Fast Charging: Available at public charging stations

BOLT EV ONLY

  • Available to Bolt EV owners for an additional cost
  • Restores up to 90 miles of range in about 30 minutes
  • Requires available DC Fast Charging port
  • Available at participating locations

For those who are out and about and need to top off their charge when parked, this is the most convenient way to go. DC Fast Charging prices may vary per station.

Plug types

When it comes to what you need for Chevrolet electric vehicles, we’ve narrowed it down to these specific outlets and chargers.

Wall Outlets

Level 1

BOLT EV AND VOLT

Level 1

BOLT EV AND VOLT

  • You may already see this 120-volt wall outlet everywhere in your home
  • This type of 3-prong (“grounded”) outlet is required for electronics such as your laptop or television
  • Chevrolet electric vehicles come with a portable charge cord that is compatible with this wall outlet

Level 2

BOLT EV AND VOLT

Level 2

BOLT EV AND VOLT

  • This is one example of a 240-volt wall outlet. It’s a 3- or 4-prong outlet that’s typically used for household items like your electric stove or dryer
  • You probably already have one of the above appliances, so you may be able to add an additional outlet to support Level 2 charging
  • This type of charging unit is recommended for a faster charge, but it must be purchased separately and professional installation is required
  • There are a variety of 240-volt plugs available, so consult with your electrician to discuss your specific situation
Chargers

Level 1 & 2

BOLT EV AND VOLT

Level 1 & 2

BOLT EV AND VOLT

  • This charging port is compatible with Level 1 and Level 2 chargers
  • Level 1 is a portable charge cord that comes with each Chevrolet EV
  • Level 2 chargers are wall units that are the fastest way to charge at home and provide up to 25 miles of range per hour
  • If you prefer this option, it will need to be installed by a professional electrician
  • Also, most public stations are Level 2 chargers, so it’s easy to charge on the go

Available DC Fast Charging

BOLT EV ONLY

Available DC Fast Charging

BOLT EV ONLY

  • For equipped vehicles, DC Fast Charging is available at conveniently located public charging stations and provides up to 90 miles of range in about 30 minutes of charge
  • DC Fast Charging is available for home installation. However, it might not be the most practical option for your home or budget
  • Level 3 charging ports are compatible with Level 1 and Level 2 chargers, but your Bolt EV must be equipped with DC Fast Charging capability to use a Level 3 charging station
  • If you’re interested in owning a Chevrolet Bolt EV with DC Fast Charging capability, just let your dealer know at the time of purchase

Can I top off my charge at any time?

Yes, that’s the beauty of driving a Volt or Bolt EV – you can choose how and when you charge. Plug in anytime to add a few more miles or fully replenish your battery at night and go about your day the next morning.

Charging locators

Range: From point A to B. And C, D, E, F, G …

Our EVs are designed to give you the confidence to go as far as you want – and with Bolt EV, you could even drive days without plugging in at all.

Are there ways I can maximize my range?

With driving features like One Pedal Driving and Regen on Demand, you can get the greatest efficiency out of every mile.

Regen on Demand

With just a simple pull of the paddle on your steering wheel, you’re able to slow down without using the actual brake pedal. This helps convert energy into more electricity and then transfers it back to the battery. Of course, you should always use your brake pedal if you need to stop quickly.

One Pedal Driving

When driving in Low mode at any speed, you can slow down – or even come to a complete stop – by simply lifting your foot off the accelerator. This allows you to use your brakes less, which means less energy is wasted, and in turn helps to increase your range. One Pedal Driving and deceleration features may be limited when the battery is near full charge or cold. Of course, you should always use your brake pedal if you need to stop quickly.
