Silverado frequently asked questions (FAQs)

When it comes to servicing your truck, our Certified Service experts have the answers to all your questions.

How much maintenance does a Silverado need?

Maintaining your Silverado is easier than you might think. Follow your vehicle’s recommended maintenance schedule, keeping up with oil changes, tire rotations, fluid inspections, brake service, and battery checks can help keep your truck performing at its best for years to come. Learn more about your Silverado’s maintenance needs here.

What is the Chevrolet Silverado maintenance schedule?

The correct maintenance schedule is the one in the Scheduled Maintenance section of the Owner’s Manual for your specific Silverado. It combines:

  • Oil-and-filter changes directed by the Engine Oil Life System
  • Regular tire rotation and tire-condition checks
  • Periodic inspections of brakes, steering, suspension, driveline components, fluids, belts and hoses
  • Time- or mileage-based replacement of selected items, such as brake fluid, spark plugs and engine coolant
  • Additional maintenance considerations when the truck is used for frequent trailering, heavy loads, mountainous driving, extended idling, dusty roads or other demanding operation

How often should I change the oil in my Silverado?

Use the truck’s Engine Oil Life System as the primary oil-change indicator. The system evaluates operating conditions rather than relying only on a fixed mileage number.

When the Driver Information Center displays “Change Engine Oil Soon,” have the oil and filter changed promptly. Do not wait for a generic 10,000- or 15,000-mile interval if the truck indicates service earlier.

The Owner’s Manual also directs owners to change the engine oil and filter at least once each year, even if the Oil Life System has not requested a change.

Do I need to change my oil more often if I use my Silverado for towing?

Frequent towing can increase engine load and operating temperature. If your Silverado tows regularly:

  • Check engine-oil level on a level surface and follow the manual’s oil-level-check procedure.
  • Watch for an oil-life message before a planned towing trip.
  • Do not begin a long trip or heavy tow with an overdue oil-change message.
  • Use only the oil specification and viscosity identified for the truck’s engine in the Owner’s Manual.
  • Reset the Oil Life System only after the oil and filter have actually been replaced.

How often should Silverado tires be rotated, inspected or replaced?

Tires should be inspected regularly and rotated according to the Silverado’s maintenance guidance. Tire rotation helps promote more even tread wear, but it does not correct alignment, suspension, inflation or tire-damage issues.

For a truck that tows, tire care is a safety item — not just a wear item. Before towing, check:

  • Cold tire pressure against the vehicle’s tire-and-loading information label
  • Tread condition and visible damage
  • Uneven wear, which can indicate alignment or suspension concerns
  • Trailer-tire condition and pressure
  • Whether the tires’ load capability is appropriate for the truck and trailer setup

Replace tires when tread wear reaches the legal/functional limit, when there is damage that cannot be safely repaired, or when age, cracking, bulges, punctures or irregular wear make continued use unsafe. The correct replacement tire size, load rating and inflation requirements are specific to the truck. Do not reduce tire pressure for a smoother ride when towing. Follow the truck’s label and Owner’s Manual.

What should I do if my Silverado has brake noise, vibration, pulling or a warning light?

Do not diagnose brake concerns by noise alone. Promptly schedule a brake-system inspection for evaluation if you experience:

  • Grinding, squealing or metal-to-metal noise
  • Steering-wheel, pedal or vehicle vibration while braking
  • Pulling to one side
  • A low or soft brake pedal
  • Brake, ABS or stability-control warning messages
  • Reduced braking confidence after towing or descending grades

If a red brake warning indicator is on or braking performance is significantly reduced, follow the Owner’s Manual’s warning guidance and avoid driving the vehicle until it can be assessed safely.

For a towing-capable Silverado, brake condition deserves particular attention because trailer weight increases braking demand.

Will changing my own oil void my GM warranty?

Routine maintenance is the owner’s responsibility. If you perform your own oil changes, follow the Owner’s Manual, use the required products and keep complete records, included:

  • Dated receipts for oil, filters and parts
  • The vehicle mileage at the time of service
  • A record of the work performed
  • Documentation showing the required oil specification and filter application were used

Routine maintenance is generally not a warranty repair. Warranty coverage questions can depend on the facts of a specific repair, vehicle condition and maintenance history, so owners should consult Chevrolet warranty information or their dealer for a vehicle-specific answer.
