The Chevrolet Top 10 at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2024: Part Two

Recently, we started our countdown of the top-10-earning Chevrolet vehicles at this year’s Scottsdale, Arizona, edition of the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction.

Now, we’ve reached the five remaining vehicles reaching staggering sale prices.

Steve Flanagan’s 1981 DeLorean features a GM LS4 swap.

T5. 1967 Chevrolet Corvette 327/350 “Big Tank” Coupe ($550,000)
We left our countdown with a tie between two Corvettes in the fifth and sixth spots. This C2 Vette is the second of the $550,000 sellers and is one of just two “Big Tank” Corvette models built for 1967. The 36.5-gallon N03 tank was included in a limited number of C2 Corvettes to provide more fuel capacity for endurance racing.

This “Big Tank” model features a 350-horsepower L79 327 engine mated to an M20 four-speed manual transmission. In addition, the car has factory air conditioning, power windows, power brakes and a push-button AM/FM radio. The exterior is the original Ermine White and the interior is blue vinyl. Impressively, the car once received the National Corvette Restorers Society Duntov Award.

Flanagan tore down the car and rebuilt it, adding a new drivetrain and suspension. However, much of the car remains stock.

4. 1958 Chevrolet Corvette Custom Convertible ($588,500)
Another Corvette is next as prices climb ever higher. This white-over-red first-generation convertible includes a variety of modern and custom elements, including a Chevrolet Performance LS427/570 crate engine.* The LS7-based mill is capable of 570 horsepower and 540 lb.-ft. of torque. In this Corvette it is mated to a 4L75-E four-speed automatic transmission. The car is on a powder-coated Art Morrison GT chassis that includes compact independent rear suspension, featuring coilovers and adjustable ride height. The Corvette is stopped by a Wilwood Big Brake Kit.

The paint was stripped using a plastic media-blasting system, then finished with Duratec Vinyl Ester primer and BASF Pearl White basecoat/clearcoat. Custom wide quarter panels were added for the large tires and custom Schott wheels. The red leather interior also features many custom elements. A recent build, the project was completed in September 2023.

The 5.3L LS4 engine came out of a front-wheel-drive Pontiac Grand Prix GXP. The LS4 was the only transverse LS produced by General Motors.

T2. 1967 Chevrolet Yenko Super Camaro 427/450 ($605,000)
We’ve reached the podium and have a tie for the second spot with two vehicles eclipsing the $600,000 mark. This historic Camaro bearing the legendary “Yenko” name began its life as one of 1,138 L78 396 cars built with a Muncie M21 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission. The engine was rated at 375 horsepower. However, Yenko Chevrolet upgraded the car to a Yenko Super Camaro 450 with many performance upgrades, most notably the 427 cu.-in. L72 engine cranking out 450 horses.

The Camaro is painted in Code EE Deepwater Blue Poly paint and features Code 760-Z black standard bucket seats. The car has been painstakingly documented and was verified as one of 54 original 1967 Yenko Super Camaros by expert Vince Emme.

The engine is a tight fit in the rear of the DeLorean.

T2. 1953 Kindig CF1 Custom Roadster ($605,000)
This car is as custom as they come, and in fact, didn’t technically start its life as a Chevrolet. However, it’s easy to see the vehicle is based on the 1953 Corvette. The Kindig CF1 Roadster is a bespoke, turnkey series production car from builder Dave Kindig. Each one utilizes a carbon-fiber body weighing 70 pounds and sits atop a purpose-built Roadster Shop custom chassis. The chassis maintains the stock Corvette wheelbase but features many modern engineering elements.

Under the hood is a 427 cu.-in. Lingenfelter Performance LS7 V-8 making 650 rear-wheel horsepower and 580 lb-ft. of torque. This particular engine includes a through-the-hood Borla eight-stack EFI setup, and it is paired with a floor-shifted GM 4L80-E four-speed automatic transmission. Additional performance upgrades include independent rear suspension and Wilwood 14-inch disc brakes. This car, CFI No. 004, is painted Blue Suede Blue and has a Stone full-leather custom interior.

The DeLorean maintains its unique exterior appearance.

1. 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Custom Convertible ($1,100,000)
Here’s the big one. Although we’ve somehow grown accustomed to vehicles at Barrett-Jackson selling in the high-six-figure range, a million-dollar sale gets everyone’s attention. That was the case with this restomod 1967 Corvette convertible, just completed in October 2023 by Jeff Hayes Customs in Bloomington, Indiana. The Corvette is painted in a classy color called “Vintage Champagne” and paired with a linen-colored interior. The car is powered by a 540-horsepower LS3 backed with a 4L70-E four-speed automatic transmission. The Corvette sits on an Art Morrison chassis with four-wheel Wilwood disc brakes. It rides on custom-designed Schott wheels and custom white-line tires.

Those are just some of the highlights of this impressive machine. Its hammer price set a new record for a custom Corvette at auction.

While these are the highest earners, they represent only a small sampling of the many special Chevrolet cars and trucks – crate engine*-powered and otherwise – that help make Barrett-Jackson such an important automotive showcase.

The next Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction is set for April 18-20 in Palm Beach, Florida.
