How To How to use your Electric Parking Brake

The available Electric Parking Brake feature replaces a manual parking brake with a button that holds your vehicle in place.

How the Electric Parking Brake works

  1. Only try to use the Electric Parking Brake when your vehicle is at a complete stop.
  2. You can activate the brake by either pulling or pushing the Electric Parking Brake button, depending on your model.
  3. The PARK light will flash in the Driver Information Center (DIC) and will stay lit once it is applied.
  4. To release the Electric Parking Brake, turn the ignition to Accessory and then press and hold the brake pedal.
  5. Then, push the Electric Parking Brake button.
  6. The Electric Parking Brake is released when the Park light is off in the DIC.
  7. The Electric Parking Brake will automatically release if the vehicle is running, placed into gear and driven away.

Things to remember when using the Electric Parking Brake

  1. You can use the Electric Parking Brake to keep your vehicle in place even if the vehicle is off.
  2. If you tried to apply the Electric Parking Brake and the Park light starts flashing, that means it was only partially applied or there is a problem with the system.
    • To troubleshoot this, try to release the Electric Parking Brake and apply it again. If the light is still flashing, do not drive the vehicle
  3. On some vehicles, if the Electric Parking button is pushed/pulled while the vehicle is moving, a chime will sound and the vehicle will slow down while the button is pressed/pulled.
  4. If you bring your vehicle to a complete stop, the Electric Parking Brake will turn on automatically. Your vehicle may have technologies that automatically hold the vehicle stationary at a stop without you needing to hold the brake pedal
    • After these functions activate, they may automatically apply the Electric Parking Brake. Certain vehicles may ask you to manually apply the Electric Parking Brake through a driver display message.
  5. If your vehicle is equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control, the braking system will hold the vehicle for up to five minutes if stopped for a period of time.
    • After five minutes, the DIC will request the Electric Parking Brake to be applied. In certain vehicles, the Electric Parking Brake may apply on its own.

Q&As

Why does the Electric Parking Brake automatically engage sometimes when I press PARK on the Electronic Precision Shift interface?

If your vehicle has Electronic Precision Shift and you’re driving less than 3 mph and you did not come to a complete stop before pressing the Park button, the system will automatically engage the Electric Parking Brake. A message will appear in the driver display to confirm the parking brake turned on. Slowing your vehicle down like this can be sudden and unpleasant. To avoid this, come to a complete stop before pressing the Park button.

Electronic Precision Shift may also automatically apply the Electric Parking Brake to help keep your vehicle in place on steep inclines. Check your Owner’s Manual to see if you have Electronic Precision Shift.
