BIG BLOCK ENGINES FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Answers from Alin, our Chevrolet Performance Big-Block Design Release Engineer

What is a big block Chevy?

A big block Chevy is a V8 engine manufactured by General Motors with larger physical dimensions compared to a small block. The original Mark 1 big block was the 348/409 engine from 1958-1965. The Mark IV big blocks included 396, 402, 427, 454 and were manufactured from 1965 to 1990. Todays Chevy big blocks are considered Gen 6 and feature 1 piece rear main and roller lifters.

Are CP big blocks reliable?

Yes! Chevrolet Performance Parts crate engines are thoroughly engineered and tested as would any other GM production engine. This includes many hours of rigorous testing on dyno and vehicle. Most CPP crate engines are offered with a 2 year/50,000 mile warranty*.

What is the difference between small and big block engines?

A big block V8 is physically larger than a small block with increased spacing between cylinder bores. This allows for larger displacements and increased valve sizes.

What's the typical displacement range for big blocks?

Chevrolet Performance Big-Block crate engines are offered from 427 cubic inches (7.0 liters) to 632 cubic inches (10.4liters).

How much horsepower does a big block make?

Chevrolet Performance Big-Block crate engines are offered in many variations and will produce from 406 hp to 1004 hp, depending on the engine.

Can I supercharge of turbocharge a CP Big Block?

Certain Chevrolet Performance Big-Block crate engines such as the ZZ632 are manufactured with very tight ring end gaps so power adders such as a turbo, supercharger, or nitrous are not recommended.

What had to change from the SP502/605 to make the EFI version?

Similar to the ZZ632, the SP502 EFI gets a double row timing chain which incorporates the required cam/crank sensors required for EFI. The distributor is removed and a drive spud is installed in the valley to drive the oil pump. The intake manifold was developed using CFD as well as physical testing on dyno.

How do you engineer an engine - for larger torque or horsepower?

It depends on the application. Some big blocks are designed for high torque and some for higher horsepower. By offering both CPP covers a wide range of needs.
