About the Chevy K-Series

In 1963, Chevrolet held its largest share of the U.S. truck market, with over one-third of all trucks sold wearing the "bow-tie" badge. Four-wheel drive trucks... the "K"-series Chevrolet models, were a far cry from today's 4-wheelers. With manual hubs and 2-speed (manual) transfer cases, these trucks borrowed heavily from vehicles developed for the military and were decidedly tough, off-road machines.

These trucks were somewhat short on creature comforts but long on ground clearance. New for 1963 were "high torque" 6-cyl. engines, in 230 and 292 cid versions, a new-design coil-spring front suspension, and a new front end look featuring a wider grill and headlight treatment. The pickup line included ½ and ¾ ton versions in 115" and 127" wheelbases. 1-ton models rode on a 133" WB. Chevrolet offered the trucks with two different boxes, Fleetside or Stepside. Long gone was the 3100, 3200, and 3600 designations for short 1/2, long 1/2 and 3/4-ton models. It was replaced by 10, 20, or 30 for 1/2, 3/4, and 1-ton models. Since 1957, trucks were factory available as 4-wheel drive, and the new class scheme would make this known. A "C" in front of the series number meant 2-wheel rear drive, and a K would denote 4-wheel drive.
