Need Alt Text About Buckle to Drive

Available Buckle to Drive helps remind the driver to buckle up their seat belt before driving by preventing the vehicle from being shifted out of PARK temporarily when the driver’s seat belt is not buckled. On some vehicles, the feature also reminds the front passenger to buckle up.

How it works

To help keep you safe on the road, Buckle to Drive will not let you shift out of PARK until you buckle your seat belt. On some vehicles, your vehicle will not let you shift out of PARK until the front passenger buckles their seat belt as well.

To shift into DRIVE, buckle your seat belt. 20 seconds after you turn the vehicle on, this feature will time out and you’ll be able to shift out of PARK regardless of whether the seat belt is buckled.

Buckle to Drive activates each time you turn your vehicle on.

Some vehicles feature Buckle to Drive as part of the Teen Driver mode, while others offer Buckle to Drive as both a standalone feature and Teen Driver feature.

Q&As

How do I know if my vehicle has Buckle to Drive?

If you’re unable to shift out of PARK when the driver’s seat is unbuckled, your vehicle is equipped* with Buckle to Drive. If so, you’ll see a message in your Driver Information Center (DIC) that says “Buckle Seat Belt to Shift” and you will hear a chime. That message will disappear when the feature times out after 20 seconds.  On some vehicles, Buckle to Drive also applies to the front passenger’s seat belt.

If you can turn Buckle to Drive on or off in the Settings menu of your vehicle’s infotainment system,* you have Buckle to Drive as a standalone feature. If Buckle to Drive is an option in the Teen Driver section of the Settings menu, your vehicle is equipped with Buckle to Drive as part of the Teen Driver mode.

How do I turn Buckle to Drive off?

Buckle to Drive is on when Teen Driver is on. To disable Buckle to Drive, turn Teen Driver off.  Some vehicles allow Buckle to Drive to be turned off through the Settings menu.
