Top Flight

We gave Eli MurrayMetzger, a San Francisco–based entrepreneur, a Chevy Volt for a day to see how it could make his life a little easier.

Starting a business from the ground up takes long hours, hard work, and steely determination. You could say the same about raising kids—to say nothing of doing both at once. But that’s a standard day for Eli MurrayMetzger and his wife, Rebecca, who have three children. Balancing both is nothing new for this family, so we loaned them a vehicle that balances electric power with the extended range of a gas-powered generator: the Chevy Volt.

Eli’s day begins by taking the kids to their schools across San Francisco. The city’s notoriously hilly terrain is an excellent match for the immediate acceleration and regenerative braking of the Volt’s electric motor.

“The torque was great on the hills, especially compared to my SUV,” Eli says. “It had some sportiness to it. Driving the Volt in the city was awesome.”

Eli’s new business venture, Learn to Fly Air, was born from a last-minute trip he took from the Bay Area to Los Angeles for a playoff baseball game. “The only reason we were able to make it in time for first pitch was because I’ve been a flight instructor since college,” Eli says. “Why shouldn’t that be an option for more people?”

After dropping off the kids, Eli heads off to work. His new venture, Learn to Fly Air, combines on-demand travel in small, private aircraft with flight instruction. Eli spends much of his workday traveling to meetings and between airports to do demo and instructional flights. But while most daily activities can be done on battery power (the Volt offers up to 53 miles of electric-only range on a single charge) the range-extending gas-powered generator provides extra peace of mind on longer trips, which is perfect when it’s time for a family vacation.

“We usually go up to Tahoe every couple of months, which is around 200 miles away,” Eli says. “It’d be great to have something like this charged and ready to go.”

It’s nearly 8 p.m. before Eli heads back to the city to pick the kids up from their various activities and practices. With space for five, premium Bose® audio, and smartphone compatibility, it’s a comfortable ride back home. The life of a father and entrepreneur involves a lot of long hours on days like these, but having a vehicle like the Volt around could let Eli spend less time sweating the small things.

“The entrepreneurial mindset is to embrace change and do something unique,” Eli says. “Making a decision about which vehicle to drive is the same way.”

How to ... make every moment count in your vehicle

Eli shares his tips on how to get the most out of the Volt.

Take Charge

The color touch-screen puts you in charge of your data. You can keep track of your battery level, customize the charge settings, and watch how well you use energy on the Energy Usage Score screen.

Power Up

Plug in every night to stay charged and use less gas. The available 240-volt charging unit can top off your battery in approximately four and a half hours, or while you sleep.

Get Comfortable

Remote start your electric vehicle with the available myChevrolet mobile app to get it cooled down before you return to your car. After hours in small planes without air conditioning, it’s a welcome change.
