On properly-equipped vehicles, when you enter a destination with Google built-in*, Google Maps will highlight Super Cruise compatible roads and show how many minutes of your trip can be driven hands-free.

Changing lanes with Super Cruise

1. Super Cruise allows for automatic and/or driver-initiated lane changes. Automatic and driver-initiated lane changes are only available in Super Cruise hands-free functionality. Here’s how to use them:

2. Automatic Lane Changes: System-initiated

a. You can use this under the following conditions:

i. To pass slower vehicles.

ii. Merging out of lanes that are ending.

iii. Provide space for vehicles merging on entrance ramp.

iv. Follow your route when you set a destination in Google Maps with Google built-in.

b. To cancel an automatic lane change, use the turn signal lever or steer manually.

3. Turn Signal Activated Lane Change: Driver-initiated

a. Ensure the adjacent lane is clear.

b. Activate the turn signal in the direction you wish to move.

c. The system will steer the vehicle to perform the lane change.

d. To cancel, return the turn signal lever to neutral or steer manually.

4. Settings:

a. Customize in the center display under “Super Cruise Lane Change” options.

5. Stay alert and pay attention to the surrounding environment before and during the lane change.

Request a lane change (Turn Signal Activated Lane Change)

1. You can ask Super Cruise to change lanes for you by activating your turn signal.

2. Super Cruise will look for an opening in the desired lane and change lanes for you.

3. You can’t lane change onto a road that’s not Super Cruise-compatible.

4. Stay alert and pay attention to the surrounding environment before and during the lane change. Make sure the lane next to you is clear and conditions are safe.

5. This feature uses radar sensors placed around the vehicle, including on its rear bumper. If you have a bike rack or other object attached to the rear of your vehicle, you may not be able to use Turn Signal Activated Lane Change.

What happens when you request a lane change

1. When you move your turn signal in the direction of the lane you want to change to, Super Cruise will start looking for an opening.

2. Even if you don’t fully pull the turn signal, it will start looking, so make sure you want to make a lane change and that it’s safe to do so before moving the turn signal.

3. Super Cruise is designed to give other drivers enough time to see your signal.

4. You’ll see messages in your driver display letting you know Super Cruise is looking for an opening, when it’s ready to change lanes and when the lane change is done.

5. Then, you can unlatch the turn signal if you pulled it all the way.

Automatic Lane Change

1. Super Cruise can make individual lane changes on its own under the right conditions.

2. If the vehicle ahead is moving slower than you, Super Cruise will make a lane change to the right or left to pass and then back to the left or right to get back into your original lane.

3. If it detects a vehicle merging out of a lane that’s ending, it can also make a lane change to give them room.

4. It can also change lanes if it detects the current lane is ending ahead.

5. If you map to your destination using Google built-in, Super Cruise can change lanes to follow your route along Super Cruise-compatible roads.

a. If your route takes you off a compatible road, Super Cruise will ask you to take control to change lanes.

6. You’ll see messages in your driver display with updates on the lane change.

7. You can enable or disable lane changes by going to Settings > Vehicle Personalization > Super Cruise Lane Change.

Things to remember about Super Cruise lane changes

1. Stay alert and pay attention to the surrounding environment before and during the lane change. Make sure the lane next to you is clear and conditions are safe before using Turn Signal Activated Lane Change.

2. You can cancel a lane change by taking over steering.

a. If you pull the turn signal the other way, it will also cancel an Automatic Lane Change.

b. Pulling the turn signal can also cancel Turn Signal Activated Lane Change, but only early in the maneuver.

3. Super Cruise won’t change lanes if the Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert system detects a vehicle in your blind spot. You’ll see the warning icons in your outside rearview mirrors when this happens.

4. If Super Cruise detects you aren’t paying attention and is asking you to take control, it won’t make a lane change for you.

5. If Super Cruise can’t detect lane lines any more or a vehicle enters the lane you’re merging into, it will ask you to retake control of the vehicle.

6. If Super Cruise doesn’t detect a lane opening after a certain amount of time, it will cancel the maneuver. You’ll see a driver display message confirming it.

7. You can customize or disable these features in your vehicle’s Settings menu.

Trailering with Super Cruise*

1. On some vehicles equipped for trailering, Super Cruise can recognize you’re pulling a trailer and will adjust the way it controls the vehicle to account for the trailer.

2. You can’t use Super Cruise lane changing features when you’re trailering.

Steering wheel light bar indicators

1. The steering wheel light bar helps you quickly understand when Super Cruise is automatically steering.

2. Only remove your hands from the wheel when the light bar is green. Super Cruise is not active when the light bar is off.

3. When Super Cruise is on, you’ll see a light on top of the steering wheel letting you know if the system is working or needs you to take over. The Super Cruise icon will light up the same color.

4. For more information, see this video on the Super Cruise steering wheel light bar.

Q&As

Will Super Cruise detect if I’m drowsy?

No. The system can’t detect if you are drowsy or focused on safe driving.

If there’s an obstruction on the road, will Super Cruise steer around it?

No. Super Cruise can’t steer to avoid any objects (including vehicles, animals, pedestrians, bicyclists, potholes, debris, construction barriers or cones). It is not a crash avoidance system. It is designed to help you stay in a single lane and works with Adaptive Cruise Control to help you keep a driver-selected gap distance between you and the vehicle ahead.

Does the Super Cruise system turn my vehicle into an autonomous vehicle?

No. Super Cruise can’t drive the vehicle or replace your responsibility to be attentive and ready to take control at any time. Even when Super Cruise is engaged, you must remain attentive and act as a supervisor for the system.

If you’re using Super Cruise hands-on functionality, you still need to pay attention to the road, keep your hands on the wheel and steer manually when necessary.

Are there any cameras or sensors I need to keep clean for Super Cruise to work?

Yes. There is a forward-facing camera and radar sensors on all sides of the vehicle that need to be clean for Super Cruise to work. Your Owner’s Manual can tell you where they are on your vehicle in the “Driving and Operating” section under “Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.”

When I purchase a Super Cruise-equipped vehicle, how long until I have to pay for a subscription?

All Super Cruise-equipped vehicles come with 3 years of digital services that include Super Cruise. Learn more at https://www.onstar.com/plans.

Do I need a paid plan to use Super Cruise?

Yes. After the initial Super Cruise service included with purchase ends, you’ll need to purchase an eligible OnStar Super Cruise plan* to enable the feature’s functionality, including automatic map updates, precise positioning within the vehicle’s lane and non-responsive driver support.

If the vehicle is sold, does the initial Super Cruise service included with purchase transfer to the second owner?

Yes. The OnStar Super Cruise service included with purchase is transferable to the vehicle’s second owner if the plan has not expired.

Why isn’t Super Cruise recognizing that I’ve taken back control of the steering?

To make sure the system knows you’ve taken control of steering, firmly grasp both the front and back of the steering wheel in two of the locations shown in this image. If you turn the steering wheel a little, it will help Super Cruise recognize that you have taken control back.

Where to grip the wheel

Firmly grasp both the front and back of the steering wheel in two of these spots to make sure Super Cruise knows you have taken control of steering.
